Antimatter Housing is the can that makes antimatter safe to carry. You craft it early so you can build Warp Cells and leave your starter system. This post covers the unlock, the recipe, and the Warp Cell craft, not the whole Awakenings questline. If you’re relearning the early game after a long break, the returning player guide covers the rest.
What antimatter housing is
The in-game description calls it secure antimatter containment, with rebound Oxygen forming a protective gas pocket. It’s worth 6,500 units.
Think of Housing as the bottle and Antimatter as the dangerous stuff inside. Put them together and you have Hyperdrive fuel. Full stats are on the item page.
How to unlock the blueprint (Awakenings)
The game data doesn’t say which mission unlocks it, so this part comes from the Fandom wiki’s Awakenings page.
After you install the starship Hyperdrive, Awakenings pushes you to craft warp fuel. Scan for a signal. Land at an Abandoned Building. Use the infested terminal. Remove Residual Goop.
Exactly what the terminal gives you is a bit murky. The Awakenings walkthrough says you get one unit of Antimatter plus the Housing blueprint. The wiki’s Antimatter page suggests you get the Antimatter blueprint instead, and the rewards list mentions both. So expect the Housing recipe for sure, and some form of antimatter (a unit, a blueprint, or both).
Hello Games’ own patch notes mention streamlining the antimatter tutorial but never name Antimatter Housing, so there’s no official word on this.
Lose the antimatter, the Warp Cell, or a fueled Hyperdrive before your first warp? There’s a Replacement Antimatter fallback mission for exactly that.
Craft recipe
Once the blueprint is unlocked:
| Output | Ingredients |
|---|---|
| Antimatter Housing ×1 | Oxygen ×30 + Ferrite Dust ×50 |
The game data (version 7.00) and the wiki agree on this one. Oxygen is easy to come by once you’re harvesting plants, and Ferrite Dust comes off almost any rock you shoot with the Multi-Tool.
The wiki’s Housing page (last updated for Frontiers, February 2022) says you can also buy it from Galactic Trade Terminals and Planetary Technology Merchants, and that barrel cargo has about a 10% chance to drop it (you need AtlasPass v1 to open those). I couldn’t find that in the current game data. The recipe is cheap enough that I’d just craft it.
Make a Warp Cell
| Output | Ingredients |
|---|---|
| Warp Cell ×1 | Antimatter Housing ×1 + Antimatter ×1 |
Antimatter crafts from Chromatic Metal ×25 and Condensed Carbon ×20.
Feed the Warp Cell into the Hyperdrive. People sometimes mix this up, so to be clear: Housing is part of the fuel, not the drive. The Hyperdrive itself is built from Chromatic Metal and Microprocessors.
One Warp Cell is enough for that first yellow-system hop in Awakenings. Later travel eats more cells. The galaxies guide covers long-range fuel planning when you start pushing toward a galactic centre.
Optional shortcut: refining has Antimatter Bypass recipes that output a Warp Cell without crafting Housing first. The wiki lists about 300 seconds per Warp Cell. The raw 600 in the game files isn’t seconds, so ignore it if you see it in a datamine. Inputs are Condensed Carbon or Carbon, Sodium or Sodium Nitrate, plus a lot of Chromatic Metal. The full breakdown is in best refiner recipes. It’s worth it when you’re swimming in Chromatic Metal and don’t want to babysit Housing crafts.
Later freighter uses
You’ll keep needing Housing after the tutorial, because freighter hyperdrive tech eats stacks of it. (Getting a freighter is its own topic. See the S-class freighter guide.)
| Tech | Housing | Other ingredients |
|---|---|---|
| Freighter Hyperdrive | ×3 | Chromatic Metal ×500, Antimatter ×3 |
| Warp Core Resonator | ×4 | Cadmium ×250, Quantum Computer ×1 |
| Plasmatic Warp Injector | ×5 | Emeril ×250, Solar Mirror ×1 |
| Reality De-threader | ×6 | Indium ×250, Magnetic Resonator ×1 |
Stock up on Oxygen and Ferrite Dust before you start a freighter upgrade binge.
FAQ
How do you unlock Antimatter Housing?
In Awakenings, after installing the Hyperdrive, clear the Residual Goop from the terminal at the Abandoned Building. The wiki disagrees with itself on whether you also get antimatter as a unit, a blueprint, or both.
What’s the recipe again?
30 Oxygen, 50 Ferrite Dust.
Can I buy it?
Maybe, according to an older wiki page. I’d just craft it.
Do I need it to install the Hyperdrive?
No. You install the Hyperdrive without Housing, then craft Housing to make the Warp Cells that fuel it.

Frequently Asked Questions
During Awakenings, after you install the Hyperdrive you get sent to an Abandoned Building. Clear the Residual Goop from the terminal and you get the Housing blueprint.
30 Oxygen plus 50 Ferrite Dust.
Early on, you combine one Housing with one Antimatter to make a Warp Cell, which fuels your starship Hyperdrive. Later, freighter hyperdrive tech needs 3 to 6 Housing per module.
Possibly. The Fandom wiki (last updated for Frontiers) says Galactic Trade Terminals and Planetary Technology Merchants can stock it, and barrel cargo can drop it. I couldn't confirm that in current game data, so don't count on it. Crafting is cheap anyway.
No. The starship Hyperdrive is built from Chromatic Metal and Microprocessors. Housing only goes into the Warp Cells that fuel it.
Yes. The Antimatter Bypass refiner recipes make a Warp Cell without Housing. The wiki lists about 300 seconds per Warp Cell. Full input lists are in the best refiner recipes guide.
